SYRIZA: It is urgent to heed the call of the UN Secretary General for an immediate ceasefire

The continued escalation of Israel's war against Lebanon leads to the creation of the conditions for a wider conflagration in the Middle East with uncontrollable consequences and civilian casualties, main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance said on Wednesday in a statement.

"Iran's totally condemnable reaction, by launching hundreds of missiles against Tel Aviv, continues the vicious cycle of violence, confirming our assessment when, on the occasion of the Israeli bombing of Lebanon, we warned that a new regional war without rules, with the civilian population as a victim, is just around the corner, with consequences going beyond the geographical boundaries of the Middle East," SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance noted and concluded:

"Today it is urgent to heed the appeal of the secretary general of the UN, Antonio Guterres, for an immediate ceasefire. At the same time, the just resolution of the Palestinian issue on the basis of international law is urgent. The Greek government must also move in this direction, together with other governments, asking the EU to take immediate peace initiatives on all fronts in the Middle East."
