Operation to rescue migrants and refugees underway off Samos coast

The rescue operation got underway when one of the dinghy's passengers called for help via the 112 European emergency number and reported that the dinghy was in distress in the sea north of Samos on Tuesday morning.

The approximately 50 foreign nationals in the dinghy have been rescued and are being transferred to the port of Vathy on Samos.

A Greek Coast Guard offshore patrol vessel, an ordinary patrol boat and a Frontex helicopter participated in the search.

Meanwhile, the Coast Guard said that 92 migrants and refugees were rescued between 07:00 on Monday and 07:00 on Tuesday in three separate incidents in waters off Lesvos and Samos.
