Katrougalos: Sanctions onTurkey necessary

Main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance representative for foreign affairs George Katrougalos on Tuesday stressed the need for sanctions on Turkey, for the extension of Greece's territorial waters south and east of Crete and for pressure to Turkey to proceed in dialogue.

The statement was made during the parliamentary parties' regular briefing on foreign policy issues.

"The Turkish aggressiveness is escalating to unprecedented levels and this demands that all the political forces, all the Greeks to be united in a common national front," Katrougalos noted adding that "the national front needs an effective foreign policy strategy which is something that, unfortunately, we do not see from the government."

Finally, he said that the aim should be to bring Turkey back to the dialogue's table and to understand that it will gain nothing from the projection of power but only through the diplomacy and the recourse to the Hague for the exclusive economic zones.
