Drinking coffee remains a strong modern Greek tradition, as 95% of Greeks buy coffee, while those who do not still stock it at their household, a nationwide opinion poll on the coffee-drinking habits of Greeks revealed on Wednesday.

The poll was conducted by Kapa Research market research company on behalf of the Hellenic Coffee Association.

According to the report, drinking coffee remains a strong modern Greek tradition, as 95% of Greeks buy coffee. More than 8 in 10 respondents drink coffee daily (84%), while most non-drinkers (66%) make sure they stock coffee in their household, and a 50% will consume more than one cup of coffee per day - usually two or three cups.

A 73% of coffee drinkers say they would not replace coffee with another beverage such as tea or chamomile. This habit, especially outside home, did not change during the pandemic and its restrictions.

Even though a 53% of people have never thought of giving up coffee, 17% would give it up for health reasons, 14% for financial reasons and 13% because coffee causes insomnia.

For 38% of coffee drinkers, limiting its consumption at home, at work or outside the home - either for financial reasons or any other reason - would automatically mean limiting their social interactions.

The coffee-drinking habit, especially outside the home, was not affected even by the restrictions and the lockdowns imposed during the height of the coronavirus pandemic, according to the report.

The quantitative research was carried out on among 1,003 people in Greece's 13 regions on January 17-24, 2023. Participants included men and women aged 17 and over. A 61% of the data was collected by telephone interviews (611 people), and a 39% (392 people) through an electronic questionnaire that was available online by Kappa Research.
