Main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance spokesperson Popi Tsapanidou on Monday accused the prime minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, of "hypocrisy" and of allowing clientelism to run rampant.

"Mr. Mitsotakis continues the hypocrisy regarding the tragedy at Tempi, claiming that he will 'battle to uproot all islets of the old, anachronistic state'. Except that he himself symbolises the old, anachronistic state more than any other," Tsapanidou said, regarding the prime minister's statements.

"He is the representative of a political family that has been in positions of power since the '60s and the head of a government that did not take over yesterday but has been governing for four whole years," she stressed, adding that Mitsotakis was not governing with "excellence" as he promised but with all the "dysfunctionality of New Democracy: with political favours, cronies, direct assignments, an army of party appointments and patronage."
