MeRA25 was founded in 2018 to bring back in parliament the dynamic momentum of the 2015 referendum's majority NO vote, said party leader Yanis Varoufakis on Friday.

Speaking in Corinth, Varoufakis slammed main opposition party SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance for its handling of the country's memoranda of loans and financial supervision when it was in government from 2015 through 2019.

With most people in Greece still suffering what he called a "systematic looting" of its economy and resources, he noted that in the first memorandum (2010) Greece was given 110 billion euros "to the bankrupt Greek state which went to French and German banks that had gone bankrupt after the stupid investments they had made in the United States derivatives market."

Then in the second memorandum (2012) came the "rescue of the Greek bankers (...), and at the same time the handing over of public property and the destruction of the insurance funds."

What followed, he said, was "the third memorandum [2015] and, in particular, the fourth, in August 2018, which Syriza had the audacity to call 'exit from the memoranda', which was for us the reason we founded MeRA25, to return the NO vote to the Greek Parliament."
