PASOK-KINAL leader Nikos Androulakis refuted criticism regarding his party's tax policies while addressing a gathering on the island of Chios on Tuesday evening, saying his party's programme sought only to raise taxes for the rich, not middle or lower incomes.

Responding to strong criticism from New Democracy, he said: "They say we want to tax those who are stronger. Is this unfair? In what European country do the [rich] not pay more than the [poor]."

He said changing the current tax-free limit of 4.8 million euros for parental transfers would certainly not impact middle incomes, and that the current taxation of dividends did not differentiate between someone earning a few thousand and those earning several millions.

Androulakis also criticised ND for high prices and avoiding the taxation of excessive company profits.
