Varoufakis:The higher the fence in Evros, the greater the demand for traffickers using boats
The leader of MeRA25 Yanis Varoufakis, speaking to TV ANTENNA on Friday, said that the shipwreck in Pylos should not become an election campaign issue.
Regarding the conditions that led to the disaster, Varoufakis clarified that he is neither a judge nor a detective, adding: "I cannot say whether the Coast Guard bears any responsibility, I hope it does not."
He strongly criticised the European Union, however, noting that the United Nations has been asking the EU to create safe corridors to Europe for the last 15 years, in order for the people to seek asylum with safety.
"The higher the fence in Evros and the easier the work of the border guard, the greater the demand becomes for the traffickers that use boats, and people then drown. You can't support the fence and also act surprised that people drown at sea," Varoufakis said.
