Man arrested in Serres on charge of migrant trafficking

A man was arrested in Serres late on Monday on suspicion of assisting the illegal entry of 12 foreign nationals, including eight minors, into Greece.

The suspect did not stop when hailed at a police checkpoint but instead accelerated and engaged in dangerous manoeuvres to escape capture. The vehicle he was driving was soon stopped, however, and he was placed under arrest.

Police found that he had loaded 12 foreign nationals into the car with the aim of illegally transporting them within the country. He also had no driving licence, while the vehicle and three mobile phones found in his possession were confiscated.

The suspect will be taken before the Prosecutor of Serres.
