The state apparatus is fully prepared, with more equipment and personnel at the disposal of civil defence services to deal with any needs arising as a result of the current heatwave, government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis said on Thursday, during the daily press briefing.

Marinakis began the press briefing by referring to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis' participation in the NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, where he had a series of meetings with heads of state and government.

"The prime minister met with the French President Emmanuel Macron, the Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, the Prime Minister of North Macedonia, Dimitar Kovacevski, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama.

"Greece is once again taking the lead in international developments, defending its interests and opening up avenues for international cooperation by peacefully resolving its differences with respect for international law," Marinakis noted.

He underlined that, for four years, "the government and the prime minister have managed to significantly strengthen the position of our country in the international arena, to make it a reliable ally, an equal interlocutor, a pillar of stability in the Eastern Mediterranean. Our promise to the Greeks is to make Greece even stronger and this is the aim of all the prime minister's actions and contacts at the NATO summit."

Regarding the prime minister's meeting with President Erdogan, he pointed out: "It is particularly important that Turkey has started to talk with the West and the fact that the aggressive practices and rhetoric have de-escalated lately creates a momentum that must not lost, a new channel of communication". He added that the discussion between the two leaders "was held in a good atmosphere. The leaders of the two states agreed that it is to the benefit of the two states that the positive climate has continuity and consistency and that the next meeting of the High-level Greece-Turkey Cooperation Council will take place in the fall in Thessaloniki."
