SYRIZA: A huge disaster despite Mr Mitsotakis' assurances

"The country is experiencing a huge disaster from the fires. Mr. Mitsotakis' assurances that 'the state mechanism was prepared' have collapsed", SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance said in a statement on Saturday, adding that "the complete inability of the state to protect even sensitive military installations from fire has been revealed."

It also commented that "if Mr. Mitsotakis thinks that he will hide his enormous responsibilities with the resignation of (former Civil Protection Minister Notis) Mitarachi for 'personal reasons' he is mistaken."

The main opposition party noted that "the magnitude of the disaster and the blow to the prestige of the Armed Forces as well as the sense of security of the citizens is enormous for cheap communication games."

Finally, it underlined that "the criticality of the situation requires a plan for political protection, prevention and response, such as the one proposed by SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance."
