Kikilias: The men and women of the fire department need support, deserve to be rewarded

"The men and women of the fire brigade need support, assistance and deserve to be rewarded for their efforts," Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Vassilis Kikilias said on Friday while visiting the Eastern Attica Fire Service's headquarters, where he was met by the leadership and spoke with fire department staff.

In statements during the visit, Kikilias said he intended to visit all fire brigade headquarters and stations throughout Greece, starting in Attica.

He stressed that those in the fire brigade, like the officers of the Hellenic Police or Greece's pilots, worked in a "singular profession" and were never certain whether they would be returning home at the end of the day.

"Many have fallen in the line of duty. Their efforts are heroic and all of society should embrace and help them because their mission is very important," he said.

On the fire brigade's mission, Kikilias said: "Above all is the protection of human life, then of property and then the ecology, the forest assets of the country. All these together constitute a sacred purpose. The Greek state has supported and will further support our fire fighters with even better organisation, so that they can do their job in the best possible way."
