News outlets have been covering the aftermath of bloody clashes between Greek and Croatian football supporters on Monday night near AEK's OPAP Arena that led to the death of a Greek man, eight injuries, and nearly a hundred detentions.

Instead of Tuesday being a day of mourning and reflection about yet another fatal incident of sports-related violence, ESIEA noted, "violence is directed against media workers covering the events." Journalists always treat people "who are in a state of mourning or mental stress with discretion and empathy," the union said, while it added that the attack was "entirely unjustified," as the press was performing its professional duties "without disturbing or provoking anyone."

ESIEA also called on the police to be more protective of media professionals, and to take more precautionary policing measures overall.
