Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis paid a visit on Friday to the village of Palagia north of Alexandroupolis, where he was briefed on antiflood works being carried out in the area following the destructive fire in the Evros region this summer.

Mitsotakis was told by the head of the Forest and Forest Environment Secretariat General Evangelos Goudoufas and the forest supervisor of Alexandroupolis Giorgos Pistolas that the entire flood-protection works span 28 kilometers, with 7 km of these interventions already completed.

In the region, he also met with loggers from the forest cooperative in Petrolofos and Goudoufa, further north of Palagia, to thank them for their contributions in fighting the extensive fire in Evros and preventing a section of the productive forest measuring 10,000 hectares (100,000 stremmas) from burning down.

He said the government had managed to secure 80 million euros from the Recovery Fund through a reallocation of resources that will be earmarked for restoration works in the region, including reforestation and antiflood measures. The Forestry Service's Goudoufas thanked the prime minister for earmarking a total of 86 million euros for Evros and Rodopi prefectures for such works.
