Climate crisis calls for new disaster prevention plan, Min Kikilias tells conference

The only way to deal with the new factors of the climate crisis is to "work together so we may try and find a different response" to the crisis, Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Vassilis Kikilias said at the international Aerial Firefighting Europe Conference held at Lagonissi, SE of Athens.

The conference, held October 16-17, was co-chaired by the Hellenic Fire Corps and the Global Fire Monitoring Center and supported by the ministry.

Kikilias said that the climate crisis is global, and the basic concern is to protect human lives. Circumstances cll for a new prevention plan that is up to date. "It is a time for all of us - states, agencies, the public sector, the European Union - to collaborate and find stronger solutions founded on new technologies, artificial intelligence, science, and experience of our firefighters," he added, noting that Greece has created a large-scale civil protection plan worth 1 billion euros, earmarked for new helicopters, sensors, digital technologies, meteorological stations, and drones.
