PM Mitsotakis asks European Council to allocate more funds to migration and EU Solidarity Fund

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stressed the need to increase European funds allocated to action dealing with migration and the EU Solidarity Fund, during a discussion by EU leaders on revising the Multiannual Financial Framework on Thursday, the first day of the EU Summit in Brussels, government sources said.

The prime minister also noted that climate change and natural disasters create a demand for new funds in the EU budget, especially for Mediterranean countries.

The sources noted that Mitsotakis had also expressed the same position during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly in New York in September, at which time he had also announced his intention to raise the issue in a letter to the leaders of the MED9 group so that the leaders of the European South can take joint action addressed to the European Council President. Mitsotakis' proposal was discussed at the MED9 summit in Valletta, Malta and received broad support, both publicly and in private, while the Greek initiative culminated in a letter sent to EUCO President Charles Michel on Thursday, signed by eight of the nine MED9 leaders.
