Infrastructure & Transport Minister Christos Staikouras spoke about the significance of constructing and maintaining modern motorways for the country's economic development, the creation of new jobs, better road safety, but also social cohesion, at the International Bridge, Tunnel & Turnpike Association (IBTTA) 2023 IBTTA Tolling Summit that is being held in Athens on Monday.

The significance of "motorway development is fundamental for both society and economy, while it is also an excellent field for integrating new technologies with 'smart' transport systems", he noted.

These systems offer high-quality services and contribute to the extroversion of the national transport system through interoperability with similar systems in other countries, he added.

Staikouras highlighted Greece's progress in motorway construction over the last 25 years, by developing a network of "road arteries with a total length of 2,500km, with toll stations and more than 300km of tunnels and bridges."

Finally, he made a special reference to the interoperability of electronic tolls in Greece that has been fully implemented over the last three years, allowing drivers on all motorways with only one transceiver.
