Kasselakis calls on gov't to extend Larco workers' contracts for at least 12 months

Larco was a historical industry with exports, a heavy industry that could place Greece on the map in Europe but that was degraded instead, SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance party leader Stefanos Kasselakis said on Friday, during a visit to the industry's facilities in Fthiotida, Central Greece.

"500 families and more throughout Greece who have been ignored will have a sad Christmas," the main opposition leader said after speaking with workers who expressed their concern over their jobs.

"Unfortunately, they do not know if they will still be under the state's or the business' payroll as of January 1, or whether they have to start thinking about their survival. From what I saw, there is no plan to restart the unit. I do not even know if there is a report by the future owner or the government as to what will happen," Kasselakis added.

The least they could ask for is transparency, he said, while SYRIZA has tabled a proposal that their contract be extended for at least 12 months. People there want to work and a way must be found to turn Larco into a profit-making industrial company again, he added.
