Protesting farmers in their tractors and agricultural vehicles were making their way to the city centre of Thessaloniki from various parts of Central Macedonia on Thursday, to press demands for greater support of the farming sector at the opening of the 30th Agrotica exhibition.

They are expected to congregate at the southern edge of the Thessaloniki international Fair exhibition centre at around noon. They intend to remain there for the entire duration of Agrotica, which specialises in agricultural equipment and supplies, until February 4. At the same spot on Thursday afternoon there will be speeches on issues affecting the primary sector and the farmers will then visit the exhibition.

Farmers from Lagada and Serres met at Derveni and arrived at the site via the beachfront, while farmers from Koufalia and Giannitsa are making their way through the city's west entrance, followed by farmers from Kilkis.

Some farmers from Halkidiki set off in their tractors but the majority are driving their agricultural vehicles, while dozens of beekeepers from Nikiti, Halkidiki will be among them.

Fishermen from Michaniona, who have docked their fishing boats on the Thessaloniki waterfront, will also be taking part in the protest.
