A crucial meeting of the Political Secretariat of main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance concluded with a compromise "after an extended, fruitful and honest discussion, with full awareness of the major issues of the time that concern and torment Greek society," according to a party announcement in the early hours of Wednesday.
At the meeting late on Tuesday, the announcement said, "there was an expression of mutual trust and support between the president and the Political Secretariat," as well as a "reaffirmation of the operation of the Political Secretariat as a political centre".
In this context, the party added, "the Congress will take place from Thursday, February 22, until February 25, based on the position discussed during the precongressional dialogue. It will be a congress of resetting and reorganisation that will sound the 'Progressive counterattack now'."
Meanwhile, members of the Political Secretariat said the body had reaffirmed its faith in the party's president, Stefanos Kasselakis, while he had expressed his trust in the Political Secretariat.
According to sources, Kasselakis had retracted a letter that he sent to the Political Secretariat meeting on Monday, in which he had held the Political Secretariat responsible for the current state of the party and had withdrawn his request for a "carte blanche" until 2027, when the next elections will be held. This appears to have smoothed over the differences so the party can go ahead with the congress on Thursday and proceed with unity until the European Parliament elections, at which point the discussion will resume.
