The idea of issuing eurobonds exclusively for the defensive fortification of the European Union was proposed by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis upon arriving at the European Council in Brussels.

"The regular European Council of March is taking place in a period of generalized geopolitical uncertainty, so it is quite obvious that the issues concerning Ukraine as well as Gaza will monopolize the discussion's interest," said Mitsotakis, adding that it is absolutely clear that if Europe really wants to remain defensive, it should consider new ways to finance defense spending.

Regarding issues relating to Ukraine, he said that the European family remains united in the support it provides to Ukraine in order to defend itself against the uncovered Russian invasion.

Referring to the situation in the Middle East, Mitsotakis noted that regarding Gaza, he hopes that this time "we will be able to reach specific conclusions, which will recognize that what is happening today in Gaza is a humanitarian catastrophe. Greece persistently demands a ceasefire, which obviously must be accompanied by the complete release of all hostages held today by Hamas".
