Marinakis accuses main opposition leader of 'knowingly and repeatedly lying'

Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis on Thursday urged the leader of the main opposition, SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance President Stefanos Kasselakis, "to spend less time filming videos that spread lies and start reading texts and laws, beginning with the legal monstrosity voted by his party in 2019, shortly before leaving power."

He also accused Kasselakis of "knowingly and repeatedly lying" with respect to the provisions of the penal code, in response to the main opposition leader's comments on the sentences handed down by the courts for those convicted for the 2018 fire in Mati, Attica.

"Instead of bowing their heads and apologising for what they voted ... they are striving to instrumentalise get another tragic case," Marinakis added.

He noted that changes since introduced to the penal code by New Democracy would have made the sentences much heavier but these could not be taken into account, as they only came into force on May 1, while it had also passed legislation that would stop sentences for misdemeanours being automatically suspended.
