The debate in the Greek Parliament among party leaders, initiated by SYRIZA-PS, concluded on Friday night. Lasting for more than nine hours, it began with a statement from Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and ended with a speech by Minister of Development Kostas Skrekas.
"We acknowledge the problem and will not cease to take measures until we see inflation de-escalating, prices stabilizing, and starting to decrease on the shelves of stores," said Skrekas, who additionally criticized the opposition for not presenting scientifically substantiated proposals.
"Opposition parties propose VAT reduction as a fundamental measure, which we have studied. However, we have observed that in the countries where it was implemented, the price of products did not decrease. Inflation continued to rise, and eventually, those countries lost revenue, with prices not decreasing but going into the pockets of intermediaries," Skrekas emphasized.
Furthermore, he highlighted how, once again, the left-wing opposition aligns with the views of the president of the food industries, who advocated reducing VAT in his interview.
"Mr. Famelos and Mr. Androulakis' stance on VAT reduction mirrors that of the Greek food industries' president. Isn't that significant? A reflection?" Skrekas wondered.
