Culture Minister Lina Mendoni is in Heraklion, Crete to inspect a series of works currently underway or scheduled to take place on the island of Crete.

In statements, Mendonis referred to the surrounding area of Knossos, clarifying that she never said that the monument will not be listed in UNESCO due to its condition.

"The Culture Ministry has submitted the file for the serial registration of the Minoan palaces. From here on, the biggest or most famous of the palaces is that of Knossos," said Mendoni, adding that regardless of the inclusion, the surrounding area is not the one that suits a monument with the glamour and enormous importance of Knossos.

"For this reason, last March, together with the regional governor and the mayor, we said that the surrounding area should be improved, because this will, in any case, help in the evaluation of this specific registration," pointed out Mendoni.

Referring to Crete, Mendoni said that it has a huge cultural reserve and cultural wealth, and that her three-day visit is a follow-up regarding issues that have been decided and that developments are underway.

Mendoni also referred to the importance of the "Cultural Heritage School 3" seminar, which will take place on Thursday at the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion, focusing on dealing with the effects of climate change on monuments. The seminar is co-organised by the Ministry of Culture, the US Embassy in Athens and the Greek section of the International Council of Museums (ICOM), while the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens provides scientific support.
