Greeks opt for 'outsider' destinations ahead of the three-day weekend

Fewer Greeks traveled to domestic destinations for the three-day weekend, the president of the Federation of Hellenic Associations of Travel and Tourism Agencies (FedHATTA ), Lysandros Tsilidis, pointed out to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA).

Monday, June 24, is a public holiday in Greece, which celebrates the religious feast of the Pentecost or the descent of the Holy Spirit.

More specifically, Tsilidis referred to a drop in domestic mobility by 15% compared to last year, which is attributable to economic reasons.

For example, Mykonos and Santorini show reduced traffic compared to Paros and Naxos that expect more tourists. The islands of the South Aegean are performing well during this period, while Chania and Rethymno attract significant shares of Greek tourists, Tsilidis noted.

"Outsider" destinations in Greece

Greeks seems to prefer less popular destinations that promise quieter, more authentic or possibly more economical getaways, far from large crowds and "celebrities".

For this reason, there was an upward trend for destinations such as Skiathos, Ikaria, Chios, Lemnos, Mytilini and Kythira, with the Cyclades always a favorite destination for Greeks, especially among the younger ages.
