Taxis in the Athens area have announced a 24-hour strike starting at 6:00 on Thursday morning and ending at 6:00 on the following day. Taxi drivers and owners will also hold a protest rally at the corner of Spyrou Patsi and Kavalas roads at 9:30 on Thursday.

According to an announcement issued by their union, SATA, the strike was decided unanimously and is held to demand that the government immediately withdraw a tourism ministry amendment relating to the cross-checkings of drivers involved in tourism transportation.

SATA objects to the measure as an attack on the sector serving the interests of "oligopolies and multinationals" and accused the government of "not understanding the message sent by the sector and the Greek people on June 9 [in the European elections]" and "continuing relentlessly the work of levelling an entire sector in support of the cartels."
