Minister of Development Takis Theodorikakos in response to a parliamentary question regarding the operation of the market, stated that all reasonable and positive proposals to address the high prices are being evaluated. He stated that the government's objective is to enhance the disposable income of citizens and families. Τheodorikakos emphasized that the main goals of the policy are to stabilize prices, restrain price increases, and assist households that are dealing with more difficult circumstances.
According to Theodorikakos, the government fully supports the idea that ensuring that healthy competition functions well in the market should be the main goal. He said that the administration is doing extraordinary steps to solve these problems, which would be impossible for a liberal government to carry out in a normal situation, because it is going through an unusually difficult time with unprecedented conditions.
He said that the government have passed a number of measures related to caps on the profit margin of companies on basic living items as well as a ban on discounts on products that have been revalued. Along with these measures, Theodorikakos said, the Competition Commission has been enforced with 50 members, the upper limits of fines have been increased and electronic controls have been introduced.
Theodorikakos also stated that the government's policy is effective, citing data from Eurostat and the Greek Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) indicating that food inflation in November was 0.8%, potentially the lowest in Europe. He highlighted that Germany, with food inflation of 2.9%, is in line with the EU average, while other countries have food inflation above 6%.
