"Today marks the end of a difficult week on which the Tempi tragedy left its mark, as we are now in the final phase of the investigations into this very great national trauma," Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Friday during the cabinet meeting.

He explained that this was also the reason why he spoke "openly, and above all honestly," about this issue.

"Our only duty in the current situation is to intensify of our work and the production of tangible results. And I think that this should also be our response both to the anxieties of citizens and to the conditions of the second four-year term. Which in turn can mean nothing other than more results in each ministry and each minister individually," he added.

The prime minister pointed out that this year is not the first time that the government has encountered problems "but we will overcome them again, guided by truth and action."

What is needed today, he said, is "a call for vigilance and acceleration of our efforts. This means that a project which may have required a year to be done must now be implemented within a few months."

The Greek premier asked the citizens not to have any illusions. "In the sixth year of governance, the difficulties are serious and the demands of the citizens are justifiably increased. Our wager does not change, we are called upon to accelerate our efforts," he stressed.

He added that "this will also be the final criterion for evaluating our work. However, having another parallel duty: in times of populism, we must defend the achievements of political stability. Because it is one thing to search for the causes of a national drama and another to transform it into a cheap party tool."

Mitsotakis underlined that "all those who believe that the absolutely reasonable demand for truth and justice can be transformed exclusively into an anti-government demand are making a very big mistake. The parties that want to belong to the constitutional and European arc need to consider their stance and whether they are ultimately fueling populism, demagogy and blind anti-systemism."

He reiterated that "our own response will be given in practice with measures that will continuously improve the everyday life of the citizen."
