Staikouras visits Santorini to inspect public infrastructure

Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Christos Staikouras, Deputy Minister Nikos Tachiaοs, and officials visited public infrastructure in Santorini on Thursday.

During the visit, Staikouras said that the Ministry has taken specific initiatives concerning schools, the airport, and port infrastructure. "In cooperation with the mayor, we will identify additional interventions that we could implement, even if they are not within the remit of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, as long as they are considered to be of strategic importance, so that we can strengthen the island's infrastructure," he added.

According to a statement from the ministry, those school buildings that were inspected were found to be safe. Also, the Civil Aviation Authority held a real-time exercise at Santorini airport with a scenario of uninterrupted provision of air traffic services in a different area, instead of the area of the control tower.

By legislative regulation at the end of 2024, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure was transferred the responsibility for the planning and implementation of the new port in Santorini to the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure. During the visit, an update was given on the results of autopsies in various areas where landslides have been observed.
