Civil servants chained themselves outside the Parliament
The civil servants' union federation ADEDY on Wednesday held a 24-hour nationwide strike against the mobility scheme and resulting imminent layoffs in the public sector, as a draft bill on public-sector reforms by the Administrative Reform Ministry was being debated in Parliament.
Protestors gathered outside the Parliament and chained themselves to barriers set up in from of the building as a precaution during demonstrations, shouting slogans against planned lay offs according to ANA-MPA
The Communist Party-affiliated union faction PAME, who held a separate march to Parliament from Omonia Square, joined other protestors arriving at Syntagma Square. Among them were fired ministry cleaners, high school teachers, day-care centre staff, welfare workers, municipal workers, public cemetery staff and other workers throughout the broader public sector.
