According to information, he answered the prosecutor's question: "Why did you do that?" by saying "Why did you deprive me of two lives" implying the rejection of his application for conditional release and the fact that he was refused permission to visit his sick mother in Italy.

The bloodstained note

As proven from evidence, the Albanian had premeditated his crime with a note that was found in the cell, which he originally gave to the unlucky prison officer in order to distract him and to manage the lethal hit in the carotid. In it he wrote "You aren't satisfied by erasing so many years of my life? Since 1997 I am jailed. I'm still in jail. Why don't you let me see my mother alive and make myself a family? Now I need to take a life from... you".

According to the documents and the testimony of a prison officer, everything happened at 12.10 noon. He was on the first floor of cells of the second wing with two colleagues who locked cells. The unlucky officer was downstairs. "I heard voices and ran down for help. I saw Tsironis blooded on the floor. I put a towel on his neck and pulled him with a prisoner in the hallway. Then he gave us the note, which was full of blood".

The past of offender

Karelis was remanded for the first time in Greek prisons on 21/10/1997 for robbery. The imposed sentence by a merger was 16 years and 5 months. After about nine years and specifically on 27/5/2006 he was released under conditions due to the serving the 3/5 of his sentence.

However, the freedom of the Albanian didn't last long, as after just ten months he was jailed on 4/3/2007 with the offenses of attempted homicide of a couple in Heraklion , at whose home he invaded to steal jewelry. For these acts, in first instance he was sentenced to 20 years and 18 months, while the Court of Appeal "dropped" the sentence to 12 years and 9 months. Moreover he was sentenced to 8 years in prison for drugs by the one-member appealing office for Felonies. He was held in the second wing of the prison where prisoners who work are hosted and every day counts for two.

So having in merger (of the two convictions) a penalty of about 20 years and 9 months, he applied for release under conditions, as he had already seven "clean" years of incarceration. However this request was rejected on 11/02/2014 by the competent judicial council, which took into consideration, as required by law. the elements of personality of the accused and his behavior in prison.
