One in two Greeks is in front of the computer screen, watching the timeline of its account, according to the latest data from Web ID research of the Focus Bari surveys company.
By Dimitris Mallas
The survey, which was conducted on a sample of 12,000 people aged 13-74 years, in the mainland Greece and Crete, for the period June - October 2014, showed that the 53.4% of people is involved with social media and each day "spend" on average 81.4 minutes, in them!
Facebook is the most popular social networking tool, as 47.6% of Greeks have an account to it. The average number of friends reaches 341.
It is very interesting that other social media have single digit percentages. YouTube is at 8.1%, the google + is at 7.7%, Twitter is at 6.3%, LinkedIn is at 4.9% and Instagram is at 2.9%. The low percentage of Twitter shows that it has not the dynamic that is described by the Media, and the fact that the google + has a higher percentage from Twitter is attributed to the fact that you become user even if you have a Gmail.
More generally, the Greeks make enough use of the Internet. The average use of the Internet in our country is at 136 minutes. Men spend online 142 minutes and women 130 minutes. Young people aged 18-24 years are online 174 minutes, while Internet users aged between 65 and 74 years have the relatively high number of 96 minutes.
The Internet penetration rate has now reached 69.8%.
Children and mobile
The findings of Web ID for the use of digital technologies by children are impressive. Children use the Internet from a very young age and gradually is increased the use of mobile phones.
Web ID showed that 18.8% of boys and 19.3% of girls, age 7-12 year old have a mobile phone. In age 7-9 of years, the usage rate of mobile phone is 3.5% for boys and 7% for girls, while in age 10-12 of years is 34% for boys and 31.6% for girls.
The use of computer and Internet also is remarkably high. The penetration rate of personal computer use at ages 7-12 years is 89.8% and 3 out of 5 children (64%) make an everyday use. The corresponding rate of Internet penetration in children reaches 80.6%, while it is striking that 52.9% of children "surf" the Internet every day, mainly from home.
The main reasons of Internet use is to play or "download" games (86.2%) and to listen or "download" songs (55.5%) and for viewing video or movies (45.1%). The percentages are higher with increasing age of the children. Also, 8.6% use the Internet to exchange messages.
