Greek unemployment remains highest in the EU, Eurostat
Greek unemployment rate was 23.5 pct in May, unchanged from April, Eurostat said on Wednesday (31/08/2016).
The EU executive's statistics service, in a report released here, said that the unemployment rates in the EU-28 and the Eurozone were also unchanged at 8.6 pct and 10.1 pct in July from June, respectively. The number of unemployed people in the EU was 21.063 million and in the Eurozone 16.3 million.
Greece recorded the highest unemployment rates in the EU (23.5 pct in May), followed by Spain (19.6 pct), while Malta (3.9 pct), Czech Republic and Germany (4.2 pct each) recorded the lowest rates.
In Greece, the number of unemployed people was 1.12 million, while the unemployment rate among men was 19.5 pct and among women 28.5 pct. The unemployment rate among young people (aged up to 25 years) rose to 50.3 pct in May from 47.3 pct in April. In the Eurozone young unemployment was 22.1 pct on average and 20.2 pct in the EU.
