Seven of the injured are at risk of dying. 128 people were safely evacuated. Over 200 firefighters battled the fire for several hours.

The blaze has now been brought under control, but the cause is still unclear. Authorities have launched an investigation.

The blaze almost completely destroyed the top floor of the building, where hospital beds and mattresses had been stored.

Residents of nearby houses were advised to keep doors and windows closed due to smoke.

The Bergmannsheil University Hospital is one of the largest hospitals in the area. It was founded in 1890 and can accommodate up to 650 patients.
