Obama's visit: U.S. President stresses need for debt relief during meeting with Tsipras

US President Barack Obama on Tuesday (15/11/2016) in a meeting with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras congratulated "the Greek government and the Greek people for moving forward through a very challenging process".

"My hope is that given the growth we saw this year, we can build on that progress. The reforms have not been easy but have been necessary to boost the competitiveness of the economy... I will continue to emphasize our view that austerity alone cannot deliver prosperity," he said and stressed the need for debt relief.

On his part, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said "It is a great honour that you visit Greece during your final Europe tour, giving a special message to the world", while referring to the economic crisis he said that "Despite the difficulties over the last 5 years, we're standing strong and will continue".

US President expressed hope for a sustainable solution for Cyprus issue and his deep appreciation for the compassion the Greek people have shown to the refugees.
