Nikea farmers announce they will block Tembi Valley on Sunday (05/02/2017)

Farmers from Nikea, near Larisa in central Greece, will block with their tractors the national highway at Tembi Valley on Sunday, the president of Larisa’s farmers’ association Rizos Maroudas said on Friday, noting their labour action will escalate in the coming weeks.

“We’re here to escalate our fight - the government will not be rid of us [easily], because our claims are just,” Maroudas said at a farmers’ meeting in Larisa and urged Greeks to fight on their side.

Farmers arrived to the meeting with their tractors, honking their horns as they drove through the city.

The Athens-Thessaloniki national highway remains closed off by protesting farmers in two sections: one in Nikea and the other at the Platykambos junction.
