Refugee girl dies in migrant boat tragedy off Kastellorizo
A nine-year old refugee girl died early Thursday when the dinghy that she was travelling in, along with an unknown number of other refugees and migrants, sank off the coast of the island of Kastellorizo due to the bad weather.
A Frontex vessel rescued five people, among them two children, while a coast guard vessel located and rescued another 20 people that were attempting to swim to the rocky shore of Kastellorizo.
The girl, who was not in good health, was transferred to Kastellorizo Health Center where she died, in spite of the doctors' efforts to save her.
A search by air and sea is continuing in the area where the dinghy sank in order to locate more refugees and migrants that may be missing.
