Athens Marathon: Kenya's Samuel Kalalei snaps gold (pics)
Samuel Kalalei won the Gold medal with a time of 02:12:17. In second place was his compatriot Rotich Milton Kiplagat and Jonathan Yego Kiptoo was third in 2:16:08.
In the women's race, 18-year-old Ethiopian Bedaru Badane was first to cross the finishing line in 2:34:18, followed by Kenya's Alice Kibor Jepkemboi just four seconds later. Kenya’s Nancy Arusei was third in 2:34:51.
The first Greek male athlete to cross the finish line (8th in the race) was Konstantinos Gkelaouzos, with a time of 02:27:21 and Rania Rebouli was the first Greek female with 2:49.06.
Speaking after his win, Kalalei said: "It was the first time I ran in Athens. It was a difficult race. It had a lot of hills but I prefer them. I would like to run again in the Authentic Marathon of Athens."
Organizer SEGAS say 18,500 runners from 100 countries started the main race with another 30,000 participating in the shorter 5km and 10km races in downtown Athens.
