Christmas tree lights up in Athens
"Christmas and New Years are days of joy and hope. It is an opportunity for all of us to spend more time with our family, stroll around our city, care and stand by those who need it," Kaminis said during the lighting ceremony.
"This year we entrusted the city's decoration to renowned and popular artists. They worked cheerfully and with imagination to beautify the streets, squares, the center and all neighborhoods," he added and invited Athenians to participate in the planned events and enjoy the holiday spirit.
The festivities opened with a concert of the Athens Philharmonic Orchestra, the Athens Big Band and the band Gadjo Dilo.
The city of Athens will host 220 events for residents and visitors with free admission. The countdown to the New Year will take place at Thissio, with popular artists taking part in a concert below the Acropolis Hill.
