According to witness accounts on Thursday afternoon, the two animals were sighted by passing motorists while walking on a lakeside road near a location known as Petra. They appeared unperturbed by the dozens of motorists that stopped their cars and came out to take photos.

Authorities immediately alerted a wildlife rescue team set up by the bear conservation group Arcturos with the forestry department and the police, which mounted a coordinated operation to take the cubs to a nearby mountain.

Nikos Panagiotopoulos, an associate of Arcturos in Kastoria, said that the bears are four years old and were born near the lake. After they were weaned the bears remained in the area because they are familiar with the environment, he said.

Drivers moving on the road that leads to Kastoria Lake must be careful, he added, because the area is a passage for bears.
