The government is negotiating an agreement on all issues, gov't spox Tzanakopoulos says

The government is negotiating in order to achieve a comprehensive agreement that will resolve all issues with Skopje, government spokesman Dimitris Tzanakopoulos said late on Thursday to public broadcaster ERT.

Once such an agreement was signed, he added, anyone violating it will be liable at international level.

Referring to the rallies on the Skopje issue, Tzanakopoulos said that in a democracy anyone who wants to express his anxiety has the right to participate in rallies, protests.

New Democracy deputy Dora Bakoyannis, who also participated in the discussion, accused the government of "arrogance." She expressed concern over the negotiation, saying that it had started off on the wrong foot. Bakoyannis warn noted that although the climate in Skopje was different, Greece must not underestimate the weakness of the country's prime minister, Zoran Zaev, in his country. She also accused the ruling coalition of being divided within its ranks and not having a common position. "We have a divided government that underestimated its nationalist, populist partner," she said, adding that the government's policy on the issue weakens Greece's national position.

On his part, Tzanakopoulos pointed out the main features of Greece's position, noting that these date back for at least the past 10 years: a compound name for Skopje, for use erga omnes - which in itself required a constitutional revision - and eliminating elements of irredentism in the neighbouring country, which was also linked to changing its constitution.

The discussion was continuing within this framework, he added, noting that it was better to not seek to preempt the result.
