The migrants had arrived on a sailing boat that approached the coast of Zakros, Crete on Sunday and let them off in the water near the shore, so that many were obliged to swim to reach land. The captain of the sailing boat then attempted to hide the vessel but local residents had already alerted the authorities, reporting suspicious activity in the area.

The refugees and migrants were found in a small cove and were transferred to Sitia, where they spent the night.

The coast guard conducted a sweep in the area and found the sailing boat, as well as two individuals alleged to be the traffickers.

The identification of the migrants and refugees and checking of their documents is now underway. The migrants lacking documents will be sent to Athens.
