New meeting at Civil Protection Ministry on storm 'Ariel'

The activation of the emergency number 112 to send messages to residents of specific areas, based on the course and development of storm "Ariel", which is already affecting many parts of the country, was decided after a meeting at the Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Ministry on Wednesday.

The meeting, chaired by Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Christos Stylianides and with the participation of Deputy Minister Evangelos Tournas, general secretary Vassilios Papageorgiou, the leadership of the Fire Brigade and meteorologists, focused on the evaluation of the latest data on Ariel as well as on its progress so far.

The ministry has informed all the relevant state agencies and local authorities to be on high alert to deal with the consequences of the adverse weather conditions. Additionally, it has urged the public to exercise great caution and take measures to protect themselves from dangers deriving from the intense weather phenomena.

Messages from the 112 number had been sent to residents on the islands of Zakynthos and Kefallonia by Wednesday afternoon.
