Government spokesperson Yiannis Economou began his press briefing on Thursday by saying that the government, when it took over power in 2019, had received a country that was in a disadvantaged position and lagging in virtually all areas due to the memoranda crisis. Almost immediately after it had assumed its duties, even bigger crises had broken out: migration, the pandemic, the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the energy crisis.

"One would have expected a country like Greece, with visible problems, to throw in the towel and remain trapped for years in a vicious circle of falling behind...today, after 3.5 years, the citizens have experienced first hand, in their own lives, that we have achieved a great deal, such that not only did Greece not sink but it has coped with the problems much better than many other European countries," Economou said.

Economou noted that the social problems remain and society expects things from the government: "With a fresh mandate of continuity, consistency and stability, we will do better and will offer tangible solutions to the concerns and problems of society. By opening new perspectives and new opportunities for everyone and especially for young people."

He reiterated that the government supports and will continue to support the social strata that most need help due to the imported crises and said the government's next wager was an increase of wages so that they converge with the highest wages in Europe, while its priority was to provide affordable housing, especially for the young, and deliver a public health system providing decent care to all.
