Main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance is committed to supporting the middle class and "to restoring the proper functioning of democratic institutions," the spokesperson of the party, Popi Tsapanidou, underlined during her interview with public broadcaster ERT on Friday.

She noted that it was of key importance for SYRIZA to increase the basic wage to 800 euros a month.

"We are fighting to change the economic model so that money is returned to the poor who are deprived of it and to supporting the disappearing middle class," she stressed. She added that "our country has experienced dramatic situations, after we lived for decades with false promises and then with harsh memoranda," and that "SYRIZA managed to get the country out of this difficulty, but there were definitely losses." She underlined that "now we can change things and support those who were wronged" and that "this is why our programme is specific and costed, no matter how much the ruling New Democracy party tries to pull the wool over people's eyes".
