"We have a duty in Greece to build a reliable state that guarantees the public interest. A strong, liberal democracy that respects human rights and a resilient economy that reduces inequality and gives prospects to the younger generation," opposition PASOK-Movement for Change leader Nikos Androulakis said on Friday in joint statements with the Chair of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament, Iratxe Garcia Perez, in Athens.

The statements were made after the S&D Group's presidency concluded a two-day meeting in the Greek capital, which ended with a visit to the Acropolis Museum.

Garcia Perez said that the visit had provided an opportunity to become acquainted with the reality in Greece and discuss the changes that must be made for young people and women.

"There must be a clear transition. We need a government that is much closer to the citizens, which solves their problems," she said. Perez also praised Androulakis and saying he would "undoubtedly make an excellent leader" who would help deliver a Greece that was "fairer, more social and more equal."

The S&D chair additionally expressed its support for the reunification of the Parthenon Marbles, with the return of the fragments held at the British Museum.
