Tsipras visits the market of Argostoli, Kefalonia
Tsipras talked with shopkeepers and citizens about their day-to-day problems and afterward delivered a speech to citizens that gathered for an open meeting in the city.
SYRIZA's leader sternly attacked the government and accused Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis of hypocrisy, saying that the prime minister's promise of better wages had chiefly led to the middle class living on coupons.
Referring to the upcoming elections, he said that these elections will be the first in the country with a system of simple proportional representation, noting that they are not elections of protest. "First of all, they are the only elections," Tsipras said, adding that "Greece should not be led to second, third, fourth elections as Mr. Mitsotakis wants".
He pointed out that "it was majority governments that led the country to bankruptcy," while adding that "majority governments are usually also arrogant governments. The country needs coalition governments." He explained that this can happen in the 21 May elections provided that "SYRIZA comes first by large margin, in order to pave the way for a coalition government".
Tsipras noted that the SYRIZA-PA plan, if it wins the elections, would centre on four things: Increasing salaries, lowering prices, debt settlements and a fair and efficient democratic state.
He explained that SYRIZA had governed under the most difficult conditions, and with the duty to get the country out of the quagmire of bankruptcy for which it was not responsible but rather those who had bankrupted the country.
In this context, Tsipras noted: "We do not ask for one more chance, a second chance. We ask for the first chance to rule based on our programme and not according to the dictates of the troika. We ask the citizens to judge us based on our honesty, our programme and our plan.
