Supreme Court prosecutor orders investigation into reported violations on Paros, Serifos beaches
Supreme Court Prosecutor Georgia Adilini on Tuesday ordered the Syros first-instance court prosecutors' department to investigate reports of alleged violations of the law concerning the exploitation of beaches on the islands of Paros and Serifos.
According to reports in the electronic media, inhabitants of the island of Paros are organising protests because there is no free space on the island's public beaches, as these have been entirely occupied by sunbeds and other installations exploited by businesses, who have illegally "expanded" the licences given to them to operate sunbeds and beach umbrellas on the beach.
A "Citizens' Movement for Free Beaches" has been formed on Paros in response.
On the island of Serifos, meanwhile, the local mayor Konstantinos Revinthis ordered the closure of a beach bar that he claims is operating illegally and the prosecutor has been asked to investigate the claim and determine whether laws have been broken.
