SYRIZA can provide an immediate network of civil protection and solidarity to flood victims

Thessaly is experiencing a catastrophe of biblical proportions, as do other regions in Greece, head of SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance parliamentary group Sokratis Famellos said on Friday, during a tour of the aftermath of deadly and destructive floods in Thessaly, central Greece.

"The priorities we have set, following the rescue of citizens and the support of those operating on the field, were issues of transportation networks, primarily of road networks in prefectures, power, water supply, and health infrastructure," Famellos said.

The main opposition deputy said that the Syriza delegation had been briefed by the mayor of Palamas, the village in Karditsa area that has been submerged by floodwaters, of rescue operations and of extensive problems and strandings in many settelements.

In Larissa as well, he said, the deadly floods had wreaked havoc. The mayor of Kileler town told the party that there are 300 people housed temporarily by the city after having been evacuated from their homes. "What is needed overall is an immediate network of civil protection and solidarity, to be able to maintain the region today, something Syriza-PA and its organizations can contribute to. Obviously we must all help so that citizens are supported and there are no victimes and lost lives," Famellos said.
