Representatives of farmers and cattle breeders as well as heads of local villages at Palamas in Thessaly described to visiting SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance leader Stephanos Kasselakis on Monday the dire situation in the Karditsa area after floods destroyed homes and crops and killed thousands of farm animals.
Kasselakis was accompanied in his tour of central Thessaly by the party's parliamentary spokesperson Sokratis Famellos.
The region was hard hit by two consecutive storms (Daniel and Elias), and Palamas Palamas Mayor Giorgos Sakellariou spoke of homeless people and the despair of families. Farmers said they also lost all the farm equipment in the waters and mud, which still covers the major production area.
They asked for immediate and full (100%) compensation, and for reconstruction of rural roads and irrigation networks.
Kasselakis and Famellos said their issues will be raised and pushed through in Parliament, calling on them not to lose hope.
The two SYRIZA members also paid a visit to the indoor gym of Palamas, where they spoke with people temporarily housed there.
On Monday Kasselakis also paid a visit to Larissa and Volos, as part of his tour of Thessaly, central Greece.
